In recent years
the bidirectional relationship between diabetes and infections has become a focal point of clinical and public health interest. Diabetic patients experience significantly increased susceptibility to infections and greater severity due to immune dysfunction
hyperglycemic state
and vascular and neurological complications. In addition
infections exacerbate diabetes progression and glycemic dysregulation by triggering inflammatory responses and metabolic disturbances. This review explores the mechanisms underlying the increased risk of infections in diabetes and the associated epidemiological characteristics
analyzes the trends in infectious disease incidence among diabetes populations
and highlights the critical role of glycemic control in reducing infection‑related hospitalizations and mortality. By elucidating these mechanisms and characteristics
this study aims to provide a scientific foundation and practical guidance for the prevention and management of infectious diseases in diabetic patients.
