Numerical Simulation of Temperature Field and Heat-affected Zone Characteristics in Multi-layer and Multi-pass Welding of a 44.5 mm × 10 mm Small-Diameter G115 Steel Pipe
Based on the ANSYS finite element platform, a three-dimensional thermal analysis model of multi-layer and multi-pass welding of a G115 steel small-diameter pipe (
44.5 mm × 10 mm) was established. The double ellipsoid heat source and element birth-death technique were adopted to simulate the transient temperature field under high, medium, and low welding heat inputs (12, 10, and 8 kJ/cm), and the thermal cycle characteristics and the HAZ width variation were investigated. The results show that with decreasing heat input, the peak temperature near the fusion line of the fifth layer decreases from 1 741 ℃ to 1 631 ℃, the cooling time from 800 ℃ to 500 ℃ (t
8/5
) shortens from 24 s to 11 s, and the residence time above 1 150 ℃ reduces from 2.2 s to 1.1 s. The total HAZ width decreases from 2.4 mm to 1.5 mm, of which the coarse-grained HAZ decreases from 0.5 mm to 0.3 mm, the fine-grained HAZ from 0.4 mm to 0.3 mm, and the intercritical HAZ from 0.7 mm to 0.5 mm. A lower welding heat input can effectively compress the weak zones such as FGHAZ and ICHAZ, reducing the risk of Type IV cracking. Meanwhile, increasing the number of passes and prolonging inter-pass cooling time can alleviate heat accumulation. The selection of
welding heat input should balance joint quality and welding efficiency.
