Research and utilization of saline-alkali-tolerant Brassica napus—Review and prospect on two decades of research on saline-alkali-tolerant rapeseed at Huazhong Agricultural University
and the comprehensive utilization of these lands is of strategic significance for safeguarding national cultivated land and food security. This paper systematically reviews the research achievements on saline-alkali-tolerant rapeseed conducted by Huazhong Agricultural University in collaboration with several institutes over the past two decades
such as the establishment of saline-alkali-tolerance identification system at the germination and seedling-stages
the screening of elite salt-alkali-tolerant germplasms and the release of the first batch of salt-alkali-tolerant varieties including Huayouza 62
Huayouza 158 and Siyou 2; the elucidation of multiple physiological mechanisms underlying salt-alkali tolerance from the perspectives of salt avoidance
osmotic adjustment
Na
+
absorption and accumulation
rhizosphere acidification. Multi-site field and positioned experiments confirmed that salt-tolerant rapeseed roots can secrete organic acids to reduce alkalinity
with a high desalination rate; the crop can also
be plowed under as green manure
rapidly increasing the organic matter content of cultivated land
improving soil structure
and thereby achieving the improvement of saline-alkali soil. Adapted planting models for different saline-alkali ecological zones were summarized and established
such as amelioration of moderate-to-severe saline-alkali wasteland
cotton-rapeseed rotation
and rice-rapeseed rotation in coastal saline-alkali land of southern China
integrating multiple functions of oil
forage
vegetable
and ornamental beekeeping. Finally
countermeasures and suggestions for saline-alkali land improvement are proposed to provide reference for biological remediation and industrialization of salt-alkali-tolerant rapeseed in China.
