Ultrasound⁃guided pericapsular nerve group block for pain control and motor function in patients undergoing hip arthroscopy
To evaluate the analgesic efficacy of ultrasound⁃guided pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block in patients undergoing hip arthroscopy.
Methods
2
Sixty patients scheduled for elective hip arthroscopy from January to December 2021 were enrolled and randomly divided into two groups: PENG group (
n
=30) and control group (
n
=30). Both groups received general anesthesia. For the PENG group
patients received ultrasound⁃guided pericapsular nerve block with 0.5% ropivacaine 20 mL in the musculofascial plane between the psoas tendon and the pubic ramus after the general anesthesia. Visual analogue scores
the first time to rescue analgesia
total requirements for rescue analgesia
the associated side effects
and postoperative length of stay were recorded in the two groups at 3
6
12
and 24 h after the surgery. The level of sensory blockade
quadriceps strength on the operative side
and PENG block⁃related complications were recorded in the PENG group.
Results
2
The quadriceps strength levels on the operated side at 24 h after the surgery returned to 96% of the original baseline level in the PENG group. The visual analogue scores
the first time to rescue analgesia
total requirements for rescue analgesia
and the incidence of nausea at 3
6
12
and 24 h after the surgery in the PENG group were significantly less than those in the control group (
P
<
0.05). There were no significant differences in the occurrence of vomiting
respiratory depression
and postoperative length of stay between
the two groups. No PENG block⁃related complications were found.
Conclusion
2
Ultrasound⁃guided pericapsular nerve group block can significantly reduce the visual analogue scores and preserve motor function for patients undergoing hip arthroscopy.
