A follow‑up study on the association between physical activity, screen time and depressive symptoms in adolescents
To investigate the longitudinal association of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and screen time (ST) with depressive symptoms in adolescents.
Methods
2
A stratified cluster sampling method was used to investigate MVPA
ST
and depressive symptoms of middle‑school students in Xinzhou District of Wuhan in October 2020. They were followed up one year later. A generalized estimation equation model was used to analyze the association between MVPA
ST
and depressive symptoms.
Results
2
A total of 404 students participated in the follow‑up survey. The detection rates of depressive symptoms were 28.5% in 2020 and 33.3% in 2021
respectively. Insufficient MVPA time (
OR
=2.17
95%
CI
: 1.21‑3.89)and ST
>
2 h⋅d
-1
(
OR

CI
: 1.22‑2.45)were independent risk factors for depressive symptoms. Compared with the control group
adolescents with insufficient MVPA time and ST
>

-1
had a significantly higher risk of depressive symptoms (
OR

95%
CI
: 1.36‑7.44).
Conclusion
2
Insufficient MVPA and long ST significantly increased the risk of depressive symptoms among adolescents. Parents and schools should encourage students to increase physical activity and reduce the use of electronic devices to decrease the risk of depressive symptoms.
