The artificial hibernation of Lampropeltis californiae with temperature control
The environment conditions suitable for the artificial hibernation of Lampropeltis californiae in northern regions of China were studied and the behavior of hibernation
patterns of growth and reproduction in Lampropeltis californiae were identified to establish the artificial hibernation techniques with controlled temperature suitable for northern regions of China.
Methods
2
6 Lampropeltis californiae reared in Beijing Zoo were artificially cooled for hibernation and 3 were hibernated in the normal temperature (control group). The experiments of artificial hibernation were conducted by gradually cooling down to monitor the temperature and humidity
body weight
behavior
and indexes of reproduction.
Results
2
The cycle of hibernation in Lampropeltis californiae was from mid to late October 2021 to mid to late March of the following year. The average temperature during the primary hibernation
deep hibernation
and recovery was 13.25±3.10 ℃
10.51± 2.59 ℃
and 15.10 ± 4.87 ℃. The average loss of weight in Lampropeltis californiae in the hibernation group after hibernation was 8.6% (
P
<
0.05)
and the average increase of weight reached 8.0% (
P
<
0.05) after resuming feeding in April of the following year. There was no significant change in weight at each time point in the control group. Lampropeltis californiae gradually resumed eating when the environmental temperature exceeded 20℃. The proportion of inactive behaviors in the hibernation group during the primary hibernation
deep hibernation
and recovery was 79.6%
96.4%
and 74.4%
respectively. The proportion of inactive behavior during the deep hibernation was significantly higher than that in the other periods and the control group (44.8%) (
P
<
0.05). Lampropeltis californiae in the hibernation group bred in the cage in June completed reproduction
while that in the control group had no behavior of mating or egg-laying.
Conclusions
2
Maintaining the temperature and humidity at 8.0-13.0 ℃ and 65%-90% in environment can achieve the successful hibernation and reproduction of Lampropeltis californiae.
