Climate change-induced melting of ice sheets and glaciers
together with terrestrial water storage variations
causes global surface mass redistribution and exerts long-term excitation on polar motion.
Methods
2
This paper investigates the climate-induced polar motion from 2026 to 2100 under the low-forcing SSP1-2.6 and high-forcing SSP5-8.5 climate scenarios within the coupled model intercomparison project phase 6 (CMIP6) framework. The Greenland Ice Sheet
the Antarctic Ice Sheet
mountain glaciers and terrestrial water storage are integrated for multi-model projections. The rotating elastic Earth sea-level equation is used to solve for gravitationally self-consistent sea-level fingerprints. Polar motion excitation functions associated with surface mass redistribution are subsequently calculated
and the long-term evolution of climate-induced polar motion is predicted by solving the Liouville equation. The relative contributions of different mass sources
multi-model ensemble uncertainties
and the associated solid Earth pole tide effects are quantitatively evaluated.
Results

Relative to 2026
the climate-induced polar displacements by 2100 reach approximately 8.86 m and 19.62 m under SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5
respectively
with the latter being about 2.21 times larger than the former. Among the four mass sources
their contributions to the long-term polar motion trend decrease in the order of the Greenland Ice Sheet
the Antarctic Ice Sheet
mountain glaciers
and terrestrial water storage. The Greenland Ice Sheet is the dominant individual contributor
accounting for approximately 67% and 97% of the changes in

under SSP5-8.5 scenario. Under the high-forcing SSP5-8.5 scenario
the maximum absolute vertical displacement caused by the climate-driven solid Earth pole tide reaches approximately 20.96 mm by 2100
with centimeter-level responses occurring in some mid-latitude regions.
Conclusions
2
The results quantitatively reveal the long-term impacts of surface mass redistribution on polar motion and the solid Earth pole tide during the mid-to-late 21st century. These findings provide a reference for predicting climate-induced polar motion components
correcting millimeter-level station coordinate variations
and maintaining high-precision terrestrial reference frames.
