Numerical Simulation on Thread Stress Distribution and Load Sensitivity of Drill Collars in Ultra-Deep Wells
Drill collar, a key force-transmission component connecting the drill string and the drill bit, is susceptible to instantaneous strength failure and fatigue failure under the extreme loads in wells deeper than 10,000 m, which restrict safe and efficient drilling. To investigate the stress distribution and load sensitivity of drill collar threads in wells deeper than 10,000 m, the torque, drilling fluid pressure, axial load and bending moment of drill collars under service conditions in such wells were calculated, and a three-dimensional solid finite element model of the drill collar featuring the real thread structure was established. The stress distribution characteristics and strength failure mechanism of the external thread root under high bending moments were analyzed, and the stress concentration characteristics of the drill collar during the make-up process and under normal drilling conditions were quantified. The influences of torque fluctuation and alternating bending moment on the stress amplitudes of the internal and external threads were identified, the quantitative sensitivity indexes of drill collar stress levels to torque and bending moment were proposed, and the stress prediction sensitivity curves were constructed. The results show that a large bending moment may cause strength failure of the drill collar. The bending moment (336.3 kN·m) generated by helical buckling makes the stress at the external thread root reach 993.23 MPa, close to the tensile strength of the material, implying a risk of instantaneous failure. The torque fluctuation (11.3-32.2 kN·m) and the alternating bending moment (±6.6 kN·m) produce local stress amplitudes of 11.7 MPa and 9.8 MPa, respectively, which, together with the make-up residual stress, will cause cumulative plastic strain and accelerate fatigue failure. Under small bending moments, torque fluctuation has more significant effect on fatigue damage. The research findings provide theoretical support for the design, safe operation, and failure prevention of drill collars for 10,000-m ultra-deep wells.
